Organised jointly by Jeu de Paume and Centre Pompidou, this exhibition is the first retrospective dedicated to the work of photographer and filmmaker Eli Lotar (1905-1969), and includes a selection of over one hundred vintage prints, previously unseen photographs (reproduced from negatives), archival documents and films. His social and political commitment is evident from his photographs and several collaborative projects he undertook with avant-garde writers (including Jacques Prevert and Georges Bataille) and filmmakers (such as Joris Ivens, Alberto Cavalcanti and Luis Buñuel), all of whom were affected by the troubled sociopolitical climate during the 1930s. Eli Lotar’s work can be said to fall in the tradition of documentary reportage and also has parallels with the Surrealist movement thanks to the duality of realism and lyricism present in his photographs.
