The Mois de la Photo 2017 (The Month of Photography) opened this April 1st with an ambitious programme of 96 photography exhibitions scattered all across Paris and, for the first time since the event’s launch in 1981, beyond the périphérique. In all, 32 communes of the ‘Grand Paris’ region will be represented by museums, art centres, galleries and public institutions with exhibitions featuring not just internationally renowned photographers but also many lesser known and up-and-coming artists. This is also an excellent opportunity to visit some rare architectural gems as well as alternative spaces of art creation and promotion, whether you are in Paris or its surrounding areas.

The featured exhibitions have been selected by François Hébel, former director of the Rencontres d’Arles and Magnum Photos, and co-founder of the Foto/Industria festival in Bologna (Italy). These exhibitions reflect the upheavals that the photography world has experienced with the development of new methods, techniques and technologies, and to make this new reality of the photographic world all the more evident, the exhibits have been organised around four generic photographic themes of portraits, landscapes, street and photography as raw material.

To facilitate a concentrated exploration of all the participating exhibitions in Paris and its suburbs, this year’s edition of Mois de la photo proposes three intense weekend circuits: north-east (April 8-9), south-east (April 22-23) and diagonal (April 29-30). During these intense weekends, the participating venues will be open to all, with over 80% of them proposing free admission. Apart from special events organised at multiple venues, these intense weekends will also offer the opportunity to interact with the photographers and curators who will be present at the respective participating venues.
